Did you ever watch the show Parks and Recreation? Did you know Leslie Knope started a holiday back in 2010 on the show to celebrate the closest gal friends in her life? She named it Galentine’s Day and it is now officially February 13th every year ❤️.
Okay maybe not official US Holiday official but still- it’s become a pretty big deal in mainstream gal pal life over the years 😉.
Some have even gone so far to say Galentine’s Day is more celebrated than Valentine’s Day nowadays!
My husband and I stopped celebrating Valentine’s Day on Feb 14th shortly after we got married…
I am curious – do you and your significant other still do something on this Hallmark holiday? I am not a big fan of crowds so we try to spend a special day together a few days before or after the 14th.
So last year my book club friends and I got together and celebrated our friendship with our first ever Galentine’s Day party! And make no mistake – this is absolutely a new tradition of ours ☺️.
Planning tips for your celebration:
- Decide whose friendship you would like to celebrate. We have 12 members in our book club and 9 of us celebrated together…
- Send a cute invitation 2-3 weeks before
- Plan your dishes and serving bowls
- Plan your decorations
- Plan your menu
- Plan for a ‘my favorite things‘ gift exchange as part of the celebration
I kept it simple and sent an Evite email to my friends.
But if you are motivated – you can definitely find some cute paper ones out there. And if you are REALLY REALLY motivated – you can make your own to send to your pals.
Heart Plates and Serving Dishes
Amazon is pretty much my go to for practically everything nowadays so a decent amount of my party items came from there. Target and the Dollar Store are also pretty dang good for all things Valentine’s especially if you are going disposable!
I found a cute heart platter last year online that I plan on using again this year (not Amazon in case you were wondering…).
There is an entire line at Pottery Barn of watercolor Valentine’s Day plates, mugs, bowls and platters. Every year I am tempted to indulge in just a couple of the items from this collection… I will let you know if I do so this year!
This heart shaped platter is currently in my shopping cart 🤷♀️.
Shipping has been a beast these last six months so make sure you plan accordingly if you are going to order anything online!
Balloons and Banners
I decided to try my hand at a balloon arch last year – they are much easier than they look but I will say it takes a decent amount of time to make. I made mine the night before so that I wouldn’t have to worry about it the day of my celebration…
For all you Bachelor fans out there – this is what I was watching while blowing up those balloons 😂.
I set up the balloon arch around my faux mantel so that we would have the perfect backdrop for photos we would be taking that night!
I bought some pink tulips at Trader Joe’s to use in a handful of places around the house.
And red and white roses from Costco for the dining room table…
Hester and Cook has such fun paper goods for your table setting but again – shipping is a hassle this year so plan ahead!! I bought their paper heart placemats for my table.
Under the hearts, I put shiplap placemats.
And I used a roll of white paper as my table runner and wrote XOXO all over it with chalk.
You can find the doilies here.
These cute Leslie Knope saying cards are no longer available but I found a different set of postcards for my Galentine’s Day celebration this year.
At each place setting, I gave my besties one of my favorite items from Saje called a Relax-O-Ring. If you haven’t heard of it – go check them out!! I have them lying around my house EVERYWHERE!!
Not necessary to host a fun Galentine’s Day celebration but certainly makes for some entertaining photo ops :).
Now for the best part- the MENU!!
We need to remember what’s important in life: friends, waffles, work. Or waffles, friends, work. Doesn’t matter but work is third.
So needless to say – we followed the Leslie Knope guidelines for our menu and had WAFFLES! I will do a blog post coming up here with my favorite waffle and pancake recipes!!
Waffle Bar Items:
- fresh berries
- maple syrup
- apple cider jam from Trader Joe’s
- chocolate chips
- sliced bananas
- whipped cream
Other items on our menu:
Sliced cucumbers and ranch dip
Plus a whole table of sweets!
- Donuts from a local bakery that is renowned in the area
- Cookies that one of my friends made homemade
- Chocolates from Trader Joe’s
- Chocolate covered pretzels from Trader Joe’s
- Valentine’s gummy candies
On my bar cart, I set up a pitcher of water with strawberries and limes, a pitcher of a cocktail mixer with champagne and a drink dispenser with a delicious whiskey recipe I found online that I have linked below!

I purchased a big box of plastic/disposable champagne glasses for NYE 2020 and was able to use more of them for this celebration too!
My Favorite Things Gift Exchange
This is not a Leslie Knope Galentine’s Day celebration tradition. In fact I actually combined Joanna Gaines’ Favorite Things Party celebration with my Galentine’s Day celebration.
Simply put – I had each of my besties bring a present to exchange of one or a handful of their favorite items. We set a price limit of $50 and enjoyed learning why each item was a favorite.
Quite a few of the items were even photographed and purchased separately if it wasn’t the item someone received in the exchange.
We organized it so that you gave the present you brought to the person sitting on your right. Of course, I was super excited to get some fun decor items from one of my talented decorator/artist friends.
Well that about sums up my tips for how to throw a super awesome and fun Galentine’s Day celebration with your closest gal friends. We all are already looking forward to celebrating our friendship together come this February 13th.
Did you notice it’s a Saturday this year too??? Yoo-hoo! Let me know if you are hosting or even attending a Galentine’s Day celebration this year in the comments below!
