Let me show you how to spend two days in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps of Slovenia – one of those places that makes you wonder why more people aren’t talking about it ;).

If you’ve ever daydreamed about escaping to the Alps—but without the crowds and tourist buses – enter Slovenia’s best-kept secret: the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.
Tucked into a corner of a country about the size of New Jersey, this is where Slovenians themselves go to relax, hike, and soak up the views—far from the tour buses and selfie sticks you’ll find in the more popular Julian Alps on the western side of the country or basically any mountain range in the Alps of Switzerland, Austria, or Italy ;0.

In June 2025, my husband and I flew from Prague to Ljubljana after spending a long weekend in Prague with family and friends to attend a Bruce Springsteen concert together :).

After landing in Ljubljana and picking up our rental car, we headed straight to the Logar Valley right in the middle of the mountains.
And let me tell you – the peace and quiet with the fresh mountain air that we discovered was truly nothing that either of us were expecting and yet quickly realized how much we needed once we were sitting on our hotel porch looking at the mountains ;0.

In a rush?

How to Get to Slovenia
Getting to Slovenia takes a little extra planning, but it’s 100% worth it.

Since our trip started with a Bruce Springsteen concert in Prague with family and friends (see our full itinerary at the bottom of this post!), we flew from Prague to Munich, then on to Ljubljana with Lufthansa Airlines.
There weren’t any direct flights from Prague so keep that in mind if you’re connecting from a smaller European city.
Bigger cities like Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, London, Brussels, and Paris usually have nonstop flights to Ljubljana, so starting there can make the journey smoother.
Ljubljana (LJU) is the main international airport in Slovenia, but there’s also a smaller one in Maribor (MBX) though it has limited flights.

While you will definitely NOT need a car in the city of Ljubljana (nor can you even have one in the no-car zoned Old Town Ljubljana), you should have a car to explore the Kamnik-Slovenj Alps (as well as Lake Bled and the Julian Alps!).
We used Hertz Rental Car that we easily picked up in the terminal parking garage immediately after landing and went straight to Logar Valley.
We then returned the car back to Ljubljana Airport after our six nights in the countryside before heading into the city for the last 3 nights of our Slovenian exploring :).

Driving in the country of Slovenia (for Americans anyway) is very easy (same side of car and road :)).
If you have Google Maps and a rental car with CarPlay – you will be perfectly fine driving in this country.
I saw on multiple blog posts that an International Drivers License (from AAA) is a requirement but we were NEVER asked for this piece of paper – EVER. So part of me thinks that is a scam that AAA puts out there to get a little extra cash – but don’t hold me to that statement ;0.

If Ljubljana is your first stop on your Slovenia itinerary, it is easy enough to go back to the airport after your days in the city to pick up your rental car and head out to the mountains.
You can get around the country by train, and their system is decent for major towns, but very lacking for mountain spots ;0.
If you really do not want to rent a car and drive yourself into the mountains, there are group tours available (none of which we have knowledge of however as we did not explore the Alps with this method ;0).
Best Time of Year to Visit the Kamnik-Savinja Alps
We visited the Kamnik-Savinja Alps in mid-June for my 55th birthday, and it was absolute magic.
Late spring through early fall (think May to October) is ideal for great weather and fewer crowds, but if you want those peaceful alpine views without the summer buzz, aim for June or September when the trails are quiet and the wildflowers or fall colors put on a show.
Our dates in June were literally right at the start of a ten day heat wave that hit the country (locals told us this is a huge rarity!!) – which gave us warmer than usual days in the mountains but the nights cooled down fast.

June and July weather app screen shots…
How Many Days You Need in the Kamnik Savinja Alps
We spent three nights at our Logar Valley hotel, which gave us two full days (plus our first arrival day since our flight arrived at 9am!) to soak in the areas’ mountain views, do a great waterfall hike, and not feel rushed—and trust me, this place deserves to be savored at a slower pace :).

Money and Plug Details in Slovenia
In Slovenia, the currency is the Euro (€), and while most places accept credit and debit cards, it’s always handy to carry a small amount of cash for smaller establishments or tips.
It is recommended to use a BANK ATM machine once in the country you are traveling to to withdraw money out of your US (presumably) bank account. This is the least expensive way to handle bank fees and foreign exchange rates.
Be sure you are also using a credit card with zero foreign transaction fees as those can add up!!
Don’t forget to pack a Type C or F plug adapter (these are my favorites) for your electronics.
I won’t travel without this travel extension cord or this portable charger because nothing kills the travel vibe faster than a dead phone and no way to charge it!

Best Place to Stay to Explore the Kamnik-Savinja Alps
If you’re heading into the Kamnik-Savinja Alps for a couple of days, let me save you the guesswork—stay in or near Logar Valley (Logarska Dolina).
It’s one of the most stunning alpine valleys in all of Slovenia, and the kind of place that makes you pause and say, “Okay, this is what I came for.”
You’ll be perfectly positioned for scenic hikes, waterfall walks, and those peaceful, jaw-dropping mountain views.

Plus, it’s a quiet, charming spot that still feels wonderfully under-the-radar—no tour buses, no crowds, just fresh air and a lot of “I can’t believe this is real” moments.
Whether you stay in a cozy boutique hotel (like we did with Hotel Plesnik below) or a family-run farm stay, Logar Valley makes the perfect home base for exploring the heart of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.
Hotel Plesnik
We stayed three nights at the 32 room Hotel Plesnik in Logar Valley, and honestly, it was the perfect base for exploring the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.
Our room had a balcony with those postcard-worthy mountain views—exactly the kind of place that makes you want to slow down and soak it all in.
There’s no air conditioning in the rooms, but don’t let that worry you.
We slept with the windows open, and the cool mountain air rolling in at night made it incredibly comfortable.
It’s peaceful, cozy, and such a beautiful spot to unwind between adventures.

Lenar Farm
This farm stay is also perfectly located in the Logar Valley with incredible views! We obviously did not stay here, but since Hotel Plesnik is the only “true” hotel in the area and this was right down the country lane from us – I figured I would mention it as an option for you as I loved the location!!

Best Places to Eat in Logar Valley
Plesnik Restaurant
As mentioned earlier, we stayed at Hotel Plesnik and while normally I would not be one to suggest a hotel restaurant – this place was INCREDIBLE!
You will also not have many dining options besides mountain huts in the Logar Valley – lol.
But nonetheless, even if you aren’t enjoying a stay at Hotel Plesnik, this would be a wonderful place to end your day in the area.
With locally sourced ingredients and a Green Michelin Star, you will not be disappointed with any meal you have at this cozy restaurant.

Hiša Ojstrica
Hopefully you are heeding my advice and staying in the Logar Valley while exploring the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.
And if that is the case, do not miss a meal at Hiša Ojstrica—trust me on this one.
This cozy, family-run spot serves up fresh, farm-to-table dishes that feel like comfort food with a gourmet twist, all while you’re staring out at some of the most jaw-dropping mountain views in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.
We lingered on the patio way longer than planned… because how do you leave when the scenery looks like a postcard and the food tastes like a warm hug?

Bar Pod Slapom
After hiking to the beautiful Rinka Waterfall in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, we made the perfect little pit stop at Bar Pod Slapom, just steps from the trailhead and parking lot (if you actually drove up here!).
Whether you’re craving a cold beer, a Diet Coke, an ice cream bar, or just a quick snack, this spot totally hits the spot—and the views aren’t bad either.
It’s the kind of no-fuss, relaxing place that feels just right after a walk in the fresh alpine air.

Top Things to See and Do in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps
The Logar Valley Trail (Pot Po Logarski Dolina)
With little to do and no place to be, spending an entire day on the Logar Valley and Rinka Waterfall Trails might very well have been a highlight of our trip!
Who am I kidding? All of Slovenia and the slow it down pace it forced us to take – makes it one of our newest favorite places in Europe!

We started right from our hotel—Hotel Plesnik—and followed the scenic, mostly flat path through meadows, forest, and even a dry riverbed all the way to the Rinka Waterfall trailhead (we continued on this trail – so see below!).
It’s about 4.5 miles one way, and for a moderately active 55-year-old couple like us, it took around 2 hours (one way) at a relaxed pace with plenty of stops for photos.

You will also walk past a couple of mountain huts that are great for a short stop if you need to fill up your water bottle, use a bathroom, or just rest your legs for a little bit :).

Rinka Waterfall
The Rinka Waterfall trail starts right from the parking lot at the end of the Logar Valley road and is just under a mile each way (about 1.5 km round trip).

It’s a steep climb right out of the gate with around 300 feet (90 meters) of elevation gain, mostly in the first 15 minutes.

For us (a 55 & 56 year-old couple in decent hiking shape), it took about an hour round-trip plus added time to catch our breath and enjoy the views (this is after we walked the Logar Valley Trail to get to this trailhead) and get a drink at the tiny cliffside bar near the waterfall.

Solčava Panoramic Road
Driving the Solčava Panoramic Road felt like stepping into a slower, simpler version of life—where every turn came with a wow moment and no one was in a rush.
Two stops that are absolutely worth pulling over for: the Klemenšek farm, where the views stretch all the way to the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, and the charming Cerkev Sv Duha overlooking the valley.
It’s one of those drives where the journey really is the destination.

Velika Planina
My husband and I personally feel Velika Planina is a do not miss in Slovenia.
This beautiful alpine pasture is dotted with wooden shepherd huts on wide green meadows, cows grazing, and views that go on for miles. It’s peaceful, uncrowded, and one of those places that makes you slow down, breathe deep, and just take it all in.
If you are following a similar itinerary that we did in June 2025, the one change I would make is after landing at the Ljubljana airport, we would have visited Kamnik and Velika Planina before heading to our accommodations in Logar Valley as the drive from Logar Valley back to Velika Planina is about an hour each way ;).
Read this Velika Planina blog post for all the details.

Kamnik Old Town
Our very first stop in Slovenia after flying into Ljubljana Airport was the charming little town of Kamnik—and it was love at first sight (for the entire country already even!!).
Even though some shops and restaurants sadly didn’t survive the post-COVID years, the Old Town is still beautifully preserved with cobblestone lanes and pastel facades.
It was the perfect welcome to Slovenia, and within minutes, we had that feeling—you know the one—we’re going to love it here.

And while we did not find a lot of dining options on the Tuesday morning that we arrived, the burek we ate (a Balkan pastry treat) from a local bakery was insanely memorable!!

What to Wear in Slovenia in Summer
Visiting Slovenia in summer provides for the perfect mix of mountain and city adventures, so packing smart makes all the difference.
For our time in the Alps, I wore lightweight hiking dresses and a good pair of trail shoes—nothing fancy, just practical and comfortable for those moderate hikes.
FYI – I also brought along my Camelbak from home (can’t hike without it anymore!).

Once we got to Ljubljana, I switched to easy, breezy dresses that felt great in the warmer temps (we got there right when a heat wave started!!) with my favorite sling purse.
Just simple pieces that helped me feel put together without overthinking it.

I always wear my favorite cooling shorties underneath to stay comfy while walking around all day—no chafing, no fuss.
And if you are traveling during summer like we did, bring along this personal fan ~ you just never know when those temps will rise to an uncomfortable level and you don’t want to ruin your trip with heat exhaustion!
