Hosting a New Year’s Eve party is more than just counting down to midnight (or in our case – doing a Central Time Zone countdown at 9pm!!) —it’s an opportunity to create lasting memories :).
The older my husband and I get, the more we have learned that our gatherings can be as meaningful and classy as we desire as long as they reflect our own personal style (ahem – DIY ball anyone?).
We have been hosting a NYE party for decades now and have simplified the prep to make it an event everyone can enjoy (including us!).

Festive NYE Party Ideas
Balloon Decor
My go to balloon decor item year after year is the ‘Happy New Year’ banner photographed above that I always drape along my staircase Christmas garland.
I also love to hang the year on my living room mantel in a size 16 inch balloon garland…
Then on our bifold doors in our kitchen, I hang large 40 inch year balloons that work great as a photo prop!
One tip I have when purchasing these foil balloons – always buy 2 or 3 sets of them!!! Many times, I have damaged just one letter from the bunch and if I didn’t have my backup sets – these decor items would be useless ;0.

Festive Hats, Headbands, and Noisemakers
These glittery headbands will make everyone feel sparkly and festive (well the women in your group anyway)!

Light Up Marquee Numbers
I have been using a set of 2, 0, 2 light up numbers since 2022 and have just needed to replace the last number every year…
Tip – buy two years in advance in case the product changes just a little bit one year ;0.
I have started buying the next year’s number when I am putting away my NYE party decor each year ;).
A DIY Ball
The unique highlight of our party!
My husband made this DIY ball back in the mid 2000’s when our kids were little and couldn’t make it to midnight to watch the New York City ball drop on tv :).
And we have “dropped” this exact ball since then!
I would love to give you the exact steps on how to replicate this same ball but since it was made almost 20 years ago, I figure the next best thing I can do is to give you close up views of how it is Macgyvered together ;0.
Materials you will need to make your own are:
- 2 clear plastic punch bowls
- Rope light
- Small zip ties to hold the two bowls together (make holes around edges of bowls)
- An extension cord to lower the ball and light up rope lights at the same time 🙂
- 8 foot metal pole (we use our pool skimmer pole!!)
- Umbrella stand to hold the pole
- Stand or small table to put umbrella stand with pole on if you want your ball to be higher (we use our daughter’s old cheerleading box!) 🙂
- Shiny tablecloth to cover umbrella stand (put hole in middle of tablecloth)
- Disco balls to decorate bottom of stand area
- Countdown clock
A Well Stocked Bar
I think this goes without saying for a NYE party – but a fun addition to our party stash this year (and a Christmas present to us from my mother in law) – was a Bartesian cocktail machine :).
For the last few parties I have hosted, I have used Brunch with Babs’ champagne Jell-O shots recipe and that has always been a huge hit!

Yes we still need to use heaters to keep our guests warm as they gather around the drinks ;0.
The above beverage bucket is my go to for most of my fall/winter/spring gatherings however this newer version is quite festive too.
You could also opt for a white ruffle bucket that would add the perfect amount of pizzazz to any party you host!
I always leave a bottle of these magic purple pills for avoiding hangovers for any of my guests that want to take one before drinking – I swear they actually work!!!
Simple Food Ideas
Truthfully, I have never found NYE to be a big eating gathering so don’t stress yourself out with this aspect of the party (crazy I know – food is always the center of most parties!).
I think between the ball drop and the bar, as long as you have some appetizers to satisfy the munchies most people get after a couple of hours of socializing, you will be golden :).
I personally serve the Trader Joe’s party meatballs in a cranberry sauce/chili sauce combo in my large crockpot, a Boarderie charcuterie board, a bowl of chips and dip, homemade Nestle chocolate chip cookies, and my favorite fudge recipe (find that here!).
