What to Do in New York City at Christmas Time

November 29, 2024

Wondering what to do in New York City at Christmas time? From sparkling holiday lights to festive shows and markets, the city is full of magical experiences to make your holiday season unforgettable.

My husband was born in Brooklyn and moved to San Diego when he was 9 years old (a mere 8 years before we met ;)).

Then we spent the first four years of our married life living in Westchester County (about 20 minutes north of the city!) while my husband went to school there.

December 1995

And yet – EVERY SINGLE TIME I visit NYC, I find new things to see and do!!

And don’t even get me started on the city at Christmas time – I truly do not think the US has any place more magical than the Big Apple ;0.

So when our youngest daughter moved to NYC in September 2023, you can bet your bottom dollar, I have taken multiple opportunities for this “excuse” to visit my favorite east coast city as often as possible!

In fact as I am writing this Christmas time travel guide for NYC the week before Thanksgiving 2024, I am getting a very strong urge to buy a ticket to go again in a few weeks when the city is ready for the holidays :).

Truth be told – I may or may not have taken a break from writing this post to look at airfare and hotel prices…

In a rush?

But First: The Little Details

Getting to New York City in December is convenient with multiple travel options to meet your preferences.

Major airports like JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark offer flights from around the world, while Amtrak provides comfortable train services directly to Penn Station in Manhattan ~ see map above for locations of each.

I personally enjoy the nonstop options available to me from San Diego to JFK on Alaska Airlines and Jet Blue.

I highly suggest using Google Flights or Rome2Rio to find out the options from your starting city.

For those driving, the city is accessible by well-connected highways, but be prepared for insane traffic and limited parking during the busy holiday season.

Getting around NYC is easy with the city’s extensive subway system, taxis and ubers, and walkable neighborhoods, making it not at all necessary to have a rental car.

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and Ice Skating Rink

Your first stop when visiting NYC at Christmas time should be to visit Rockefeller Center – a quintessential New York City holiday experience, with the iconic Christmas tree against the city skyline.

If you are a skater (or not!) – make an ice skating reservation here to glide around the famous ice rink, surrounded by the magic of the most famous Christmas tree in America :).

Or do like the majority of visitors – take some photos and watch the skaters…

VIP Tour of Top of the Rock and Rooftop Gardens

In May 2023, I splurged and bought VIP tickets for my daughter and I to get exclusive access to the historic rooftop gardens of Rockefeller Garden :).

My only expectation was that I was going to love seeing the gardens and the views – but we learned so much more about the extremely interesting history of the entire Rockefeller Center block.

I have seen photos of how magical the gardens are at Christmas time – especially to see 5th Avenue decked out for the holidays from above :).

Count the Festive Decor on Avenue of the Americas

The holiday decorations on Avenue of the Americas are a dazzling display of oversized ornaments, twinkling lights, and festive sculptures that capture the magic of the season.

Strolling along this iconic avenue in December is a must to soak in the vibrant Christmas spirit of New York City.

See the Google map above for location of the decorations below ;).

Stay at Lotte New York Palace Hotel

While I have stayed in many different neighborhoods of NYC (you can read my post with the best places to stay in the city here), I can absolutely confirm that staying at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel at Christmas time is a splurge you will not regret :).

It is centrally located close to all the festivities in midtown Manhattan but more than that – if you stay at the hotel, you will also get to enjoy the decorations with minimal crowds if you come and go back to your accomodations at various times throughout the day!

Fun fact: the Lotte was also the backdrop for many iconic Gossip Girl filming scenes…

Visit Central Park

Central Park in December transforms into a winter wonderland, with its peaceful paths, city views, and charming bridges.

Enjoy a relaxing walk, grab a hot cocoa and cookie at Le Pain Quotidien, take a horse-drawn carriage ride, or visit the Wollman Rink for some ice skating.

Horse and Carriage Ride

If you’re planning to enjoy a Central Park carriage ride during your December visit to New York City, here are a couple of tips to ensure a delightful experience:

  1. Check the Official Rates: Before your ride, familiarize yourself with the official rates for carriage rides, which are typically set by the city. Prices are often based on the length of the ride and number of passengers. Confirm the cost with the driver before starting the ride to avoid surprises.
  2. Book in Advance if Possible: Many reputable companies offer pre-booked rides online, ensuring you get a guaranteed rate and avoid being overcharged by opportunistic vendors during peak holiday times.
  3. Choose Licensed Carriages: Look for licensed drivers and carriages, which can often be identified by city-issued plaques or badges. Licensed operators are more likely to follow official pricing and safety guidelines.

By staying informed and planning ahead, you can relax and enjoy this magical New York tradition without worry.

Enjoy the Macy’s Herald Square Window Displays

Macy’s Herald Square windows are a must-see during the holiday season, featuring beautifully themed displays that capture the magic of Christmas.

These iconic window displays offer a nostalgic holiday experience right in the heart of NYC.

Take in a Show

A Broadway show is a must-see experience during a December visit to New York City, offering world-class performances.

Whether you’re enjoying a classic musical or a new hit, the energy of the theater district will make your night (or day if you see a matinee!) unforgettable.

Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular

Seeing the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and the Rockettes is a holiday tradition that brings magic to the season with dazzling performances and high-energy choreography.

It’s a festive must-do that captures the spirit of Christmas in New York City and is especially enjoyable if visiting with children.

Eat at One of NYC’s Festive Holiday Restaurants

Tiffany’s Blue Box Cafe

Tiffany’s Blue Box Café is located on the 6th Floor of the Tiffany & Co. Landmark Store.

Dining at Tiffany’s Blue Box Cafe during Christmas time offers a chic, festive experience with elegant holiday décor and a delicious menu – especially the cocktails!

To make a reservation at the Tiffany Blue Box Café in New York City, you can:

  1. Go to Resy
  2. Make a reservation 30 days in advance at midnight
  3. Have your credit card ready to book before 8:59 AM

Reservations are highly recommended, but walk-ins are also accepted:

  • The restaurant holds tables for walk-ins throughout the day.
  • There are seven seats at the bar that are first come, first served.
  • The restaurant usually opens reservations two days in advance around 4 PM.
  • The restaurant releases more reservations during the 4 to 5 PM window and the food is equally as tasty!
  • Put yourself on the waitlist and be flexible if a spot opens – even if it is later in the day! We had a 3:30pm spot open up for us and were able to take our time eating so that we actually closed the cafe and enjoyed the slow quiet pace in the establishment :).

Lille’s Victorian Establishment

With two locations Lillie’s Times Square, Lillie’s Union Square (this is the location we ate at) as well as their sister restaurant Papillon Bistro & Bar (known for being equally as festive!) – you will need a reservation to eat at any of these three during the holiday season.

While the food is not spectacular nor the best you will likely have in NY (see my post with my favorite NYC restaurants here), the festive and cozy atmosphere will easily put you in the holiday spirit :).

Rolf’s German Bar

My daughter that lives in NYC visited Rolf’s German Restaurant and Bar in December 2023. She had to actually walk into the establishment in October to get a December reservation (they rarely pick up the phone and do not use any online reservation system as of 2024).

Rolf’s is on every most festive restaurant in NYC list year after year.

However after getting drinks here, she and her date decided to not actually have dinner here after all ;0.

But certainly make an effort to stop for drinks in this notoriously merry bar if you have the time!

NYC at Christmas Time | What to do in New York City at Christmas time | Top things to see and do in New York at Christmas | A Christmas time guide to New York CIty | How to spend 3 days in Manhattan in December | Christmas in New York | Top sights in NY in December

Getting a reservation at Rolf’s German Restaurant and Bar during the Christmas season can be a challenge.

Here are a few tips to help you snag a reservation:

  1. Book Early: Rolf’s is especially popular during the Christmas season, so it’s crucial to book your reservation as early as possible. Call ahead for reservations well in advance, ideally by early October/early November, to increase your chances of securing a table during peak times.
  2. Try the Weekdays: Weekends at Rolf’s can be packed with both locals and tourists, so consider booking your reservation for a weekday, particularly Monday through Thursday. The crowds tend to be smaller, and you’ll have a better chance of getting a prime time slot.
  3. Be Flexible with Time: If you’re flexible with the time, you may have more success securing a reservation. Try to book an earlier or later time slot (like 5:00 pm or 9:00 pm) when there may be less demand.
  4. Call for a Spot at the Bar: If you can’t get a reservation for a table, try calling to inquire about bar seating. Rolf’s has a cozy bar area that is also beautifully decorated for the holidays, and you can still enjoy the festive atmosphere and delicious food and drinks.
  5. Be Persistent: If you don’t get through on your first attempt, don’t give up. Calling during off-peak hours or leaving a voicemail with your desired reservation time can sometimes result in a spot opening up closer to the date.
  6. Ask About Waitlist Options: If reservations are fully booked, ask about the waitlist. Sometimes, last-minute cancellations or no-shows open up additional seating. Being on the waitlist gives you a chance to get in if someone else cancels.
  7. Consider Off-Peak Christmas Dates: If you’re looking to experience Rolf’s Christmas magic but want to avoid the busiest times, try booking closer to Christmas Eve or after New Year’s Day, when the crowds tend to thin out a bit.

Tavern on the Green

Having lived in NY from 1993-1997 and never making the time to eat at Tavern on the Green in Central Park, this was a highlight of my December 2023 trip to the city :).

Tavern on the Green has a rich history dating back to 1870, originally serving as a sheepfold before becoming one of New York City’s most iconic and elegant restaurants.

If you decide to not have a meal at this historic establishment, at minimum go get a drink at their cheery and gorgeously decorated bar space and take some photos on their festive patio.

Stroll the Shopping Streets and Tree Stands in SOHO

While most people stick to Times Square and 5th/6th Avenues in Midtown Manhattan, SOHO (stands for South of Houston {street}) is a way better option for street strolling and window shopping (or ACTUALLY shopping) in the city ;).

SoHo has a chic mix of high-end boutiques, art galleries, and blackstone lined cobblestone streets.

The West Village neighborhood is also close to SOHO which is also a favorite neighborhood of mine (and my daughter’s!).

Greene Street is one of my favorite SOHO streets (see location on map at top of this post) as well as Spring, Prince, and Grand Streets.

Visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Holiday Exhibit

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a magical destination during December, featuring a stunning 20-foot Christmas tree adorned with an exquisite Neapolitan Baroque crèche.

Visitors can also explore its world-class exhibits, offering a perfect blend of holiday charm and artistic inspiration.

Dyker Heights Christmas Lights

Visiting the Dyker Heights Christmas Lights is a magical way to embrace the holiday spirit and is a must-see during your December trip to New York City.

Here’s how to make the most of your visit:

  1. Plan Your Visit: The best time to see the lights is between dusk and 9:00 PM, typically from Thanksgiving weekend through New Year’s Eve. Aim for a weekday evening to avoid the weekend crowds.
  2. Getting There:
    • By Subway: Take the D, N, or R train to the 86th Street station in Brooklyn. From there, it’s about a 15-minute walk to Dyker Heights (centered around 11th to 13th Avenues and 83rd to 86th Streets).
    • By Car: If driving, be prepared for limited parking in the neighborhood. It’s best to park further out and walk to the lights.
    • By Tour: Consider booking a guided bus tour for a hassle-free experience. Many tours include transportation and expert guides who share the history and fun facts about the displays.
  3. Wear Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be walking a lot, so comfortable footwear and warm layers are essential for exploring this winter wonderland.
  4. What to Expect: Stroll through the neighborhood to see houses adorned with elaborate light displays, inflatables, and festive decorations. Many displays are professionally designed and create a magical atmosphere.
  5. Stay Respectful: Remember, Dyker Heights is a residential neighborhood. Be mindful of noise levels and avoid blocking driveways or littering.
  6. Bring Your Camera: The lights are stunning, so don’t forget to snap some photos for keepsakes and memories.
  7. Grab a Bite Nearby: After your visit, warm up with a meal at a nearby Brooklyn eatery or café to round out your evening.

What to Wear in NYC at Christmas Time

Pack warm, stylish layers for your December trip to New York City, as temperatures can be chilly, especially outdoors.

Comfortable walking shoes, a cozy coat, and accessories like a scarf, hat, and gloves will keep you snug while exploring the festive city streets.

I absolutely love this festive red coat and scarf.
